California Sea Lion Jaw by Gesp56
California Sea Lion Jaw

For those interested, the California Sea Lion's skull is coming along nicely. Its got a few problem areas that are probably going to require acetone but other than that its going nicely.

The jaw on the other hand is completely done! I placed it in a separate jar about a week or so ago so it could finish degreasing and it was finished when I checked today. I then took it out and let it sit for a few hours in peroxide. It came out of peroxide about an hour ago and now its nearly done drying. Placed all the teeth into their sockets so the bone doesn't shrink too much as it dries, which can make putting teeth in a pain in the ass, and it looks wonderful.

The teeth aren't glued in yet, that'll be done when the skull is done. I'll glue all the teeth in at the same time so I can fit the jaw onto the skull and allow the teeth to dry into their proper positions. Really excited to get this skull finished. Its been a long time working on it!

To see the skull before I started cleaning it check here: gesp56.deviantart.com/art/Cali…

This jaw is from the skull of a young adult female California Sea Lion. This species is protected by the MMPA(Marine Mammal Protection Act of 1972) but this skull is completely legal to own as it predates the act by 14 years as this skull was collected in 1958. The skull is a little over 9" in length and is quite hefty. It is missing no teeth, has no damage, and its turbinates are 100% intact.

Violet Turaco Skull by Gesp56
Violet Turaco Skull
Here's a skull that came from a full carcass I have in my freezer. This skull is from a male Violet Turaco that died in a zoo, went to a friend of a mine, and then was given to me for free as a gift after it was skinned for a taxidermy mount. I've had this skull and its carcass in my freezer for over a year but a couple weeks ago I finally decided to try cleaning the skull. Unfortunately the skin for the crest degraded and the beak lost a lot of color but I'm hoping to find a good bird taxidermist that's capable of restoring the crest and beak to their natural state. This skull is not from a protected species and was legal for me to receive as a gift. This animal died in a zoo as I mentioned before and was not killed for its bones or feathers.

California Sea Lion Skull Update by Gesp56
California Sea Lion Skull Update
Here's a little update on the California Sea Lion skull I started cleaning a month ago. The skull is much whiter now and is nearly done degreasing. The occipital condyles are finally white. When I started they were a dark grayish-black and were incredibly greasy. To see the skull before I started cleaning it check here: gesp56.deviantart.com/art/Cali…

California Sea Lion Skull
Excuse the caption over the photo. This was taken using my snapchat, really quickly, before I started cleaning the skull. This is actually the only picture I took before I started cleaning it as I was just too excited and didn't stop to think that pictures would be cool to have. So far in the cleaning process I've whitened the skull, removed the majority of the writing (I left the data on one of the jaws for legal purposes), removed nearly all the teeth, and started the degreasing process. At this time the skull is in a heated solution of Dawn/water but it will eventually be transferred into acetone once I have the money, as acetone is very expensive.

Olive Baboon Skull by Gesp56
Olive Baboon Skull
Here's my Olive Baboon skull. I've had this skull for a long time now and I'm really contemplating sending it off to get cleaned more as it could use some work.

Well i'm Matthew, I was born in Italy and currently live in the U.S. I'm 18 years old. My interests in art have died over the years due to pressure by my family to pursue it as a career as I have no other talents, according to them.

To me, art isn't supposed to be a job. I don't want to have to wake up everyday and be forced to create something that may or may not peak my interest. Because of this pressure I've chosen not to paint or draw anything and I haven't done either in a couple years unfortunately. Fortunately though, my love for art has been replaced by my skull and insect collecting hobbies.

I rarely upload to this account but when I do it'll most likely be random pictures, my skulls, or my insect collection.Oh and i'm openly gay, thanks for taking the time to read this. If you have any questions shoot my a pm, and don't forget to check out my submissions and leave comments, critics, and faves!
